38 eye two NRM flagbearer slots in EALA

KAMPALA.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has nominated 38 candidates to contest as party flagbearers for two vacant seats in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The nominations, concluded on Thursday, followed a swift call for expressions of interest issued earlier in the week. Dr Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, described the process as transparent and reflective of strong party interest in regional representation. Out of 39 applications received, 38 candidates were successfully nominated.

The two seats fell vacant after Denis Namara and James Kakooza were elected to Uganda’s 12th Parliament in January 2026. The successful NRM flagbearers will be chosen through vetting by the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) before final election by the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, with the process expected to culminate soon to meet the April 15 deadline for submission to the EALA.

Among the high-profile contenders is Fred Rwakizi, a prominent Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) activist and businessman. Rwakizi’s manifesto is anchored on economic transformation and strategic security, positioning him as a voice for robust regional policies that drive growth and safeguard national interests.

Another notable aspirant is Israel Kyarisiima, a Pan-African youth leader. He has promised to advance Uganda’s national interests within a secure, economically integrated, and politically stable East Africa, emphasizing youth empowerment and deeper regional cooperation.

The full list of nominated candidates includes: Agasha Juliet Bashisha, Ainebyona Thomas, Akampurira Davis, Akol Vankar, Amal Juliana Obonyo, Balya Beatrice Karungi, Buhaburwa Emmanuel, Bwanga Philemon, Byarugaba James, Ebal Brownie, Enid Mirembe, Isaac Mulindwa Ssozi, Kamateneti Josylyne, Kamukama Elias, Kashaka Mutungi Steven, Kato Robert, Katuramu Hood Kiribedda, Kiryowa Stella, Kisembo Ronex Tendo, Kiwanda Godfrey Ssubi, Kiwanuka Briton, Lauben Bwengye, Marwaha Katongole Singh Parminder, Mivule Ronald Musoke, Mwesigye Muhammad, Nabwire Sharon Veron, Namufumba Peninah Winfred, Nanziri Aminah Lukanga, Odongtho Charles, Rwandarugali Phiona, Sasagah Godfrey Wanzira, Tiberondwa Stephen Bujingo, Tuhaise John Kabezire, Twizire Nobert, and Wadero Hamuza.

Party officials have urged all nominees to remain committed to NRM ideals, noting that the exercise demonstrates the party’s robust internal democracy. Unsuccessful candidates have been encouraged to eye future opportunities, including in 2027.

The development underscores NRM’s continued dominance in Uganda’s representation at the EALA, the legislative organ of the East African Community, as the country pushes for deeper integration, trade, and shared prosperity across the region.
