Anita Among Honors Nathan Okori, Pledges Support to Family

Speaker Anita Among delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late Nathan Okori, describing him as a father figure whose influence continues through his children.

Okori, who died on March 20, 2026, was laid to rest following a funeral service held on March 30 at Christ Church in Gulu. Among said she attended not only in her official role but also out of personal grief, noting that her close relationship with Okori came through his son, the late Jacob Oulanyah.

She reflected on Okori’s life, highlighting his role in raising Oulanyah, whom she praised as an exceptional lawyer, legislator, and national leader who left a lasting mark on Uganda’s politics.

Among also reassured the bereaved family of ongoing support from Oulanyah’s friends, including assistance with education and other needs. She encouraged mourners to draw inspiration from Okori’s life by striving to make meaningful contributions to others.

Recalling her bond with Oulanyah, Among spoke of their close friendship and the support they gave each other, including during his final days. She said they had committed to continuing his legacy.

She further shared that she has maintained a relationship with the family, frequently visiting Okori’s home in Lalogi and exchanging acts of kindness over the years. Emphasizing cultural values, Among noted that daughters have a special duty to honor their fathers, and she considers it her responsibility to stand firmly with the family.

As part of her support, she contributed Shs10 million and nine cows, and pledged additional backing from Parliament. A condolence message from Yoweri Museveni was also delivered, in which he extended sympathy on behalf of the government and ruling party, along with a contribution of Shs20 million.

In his message, Museveni praised Okori for raising responsible and accomplished individuals, particularly Oulanyah, whose service as Speaker was marked by dedication and patriotism.

The funeral was attended by several dignitaries, including Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, alongside family, friends, and members of the public who gathered to honor a life widely regarded as impactful and influential.
