Shock and grief have engulfed Kikube District and the wider Bunyoro sub-region following the tragic death of Chairman Banura Kyaligonza, described by many as a humble, peaceful, and deeply patriotic leader.
Kyaligonza reportedly lost his life in a road accident that occurred just moments ago along the Kikube–Hoima road. According to preliminary information, he was struck by a commuter taxi, commonly known as a “drone.”
He was the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, His Excellency Major General (Rtd) Matia Kyaligonza, a prominent national figure. At the time of his passing, Banura Kyaligonza was serving as the Chairman of Kikube District and had also been elected to continue in the same position, reflecting the confidence the people had in his leadership.
His sudden death is being mourned as a profound loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Obukama bwa Bunyoro Kitara, where he was regarded as a committed son of the kingdom, and to Uganda at large.
Kyaligonza was also an active member of the Patriotic League of Uganda, a group associated with Muhoozi Kainerugaba, where he contributed to mobilization efforts and youth engagement.
Leaders and residents across Bunyoro have described him as a rising figure whose vision and dedication positioned him among the most promising leaders of his generation. His death has left a significant void in the district’s leadership and future prospects.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about road safety, with calls for motorists, particularly drivers of public transport vehicles, to exercise greater caution and responsibility to protect the lives of all road users.
As the community comes to terms with this heartbreaking loss, messages of condolence continue to pour in, honoring a man remembered for his calm demeanor, service, and patriotism.
“Mahano munno,” many have expressed in grief — a Runyoro phrase acknowledging the pain of loss.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
