KIU, eight other varsities cleared to offer pharmacy degree

‎KAMPALA.Nine universities including Kampala International University Western Campus in Ishaka Municipality have been accredited to teach the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme.

In a public notice dated April 16, 2026, the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU), in collaboration with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), listed the universities now cleared to run the programme.

‎Other accredited universities include: Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Gulu University, Busitema University.

‎Others are; Fins Medical University, Jeph International University, Victoria University and Seeta University .

‎However, the regulators warned that the approval will be withdrawn if institutions fail to meet required standards.

‎“The universities must adhere to the standards, otherwise the PSU Council may withdraw their recognition,” Dr. Lutoti Stephen, the Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda, said in the notice.

‎The PSU, the national professional body for pharmacists established under the Pharmacy and Drugs Act Cap 309, said the move is aimed at ensuring quality training and safeguarding professional standards in the sector.

‎“Only graduates of Bachelor of Pharmacy or its equivalent from recognized universities can be considered for membership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda and their eventual registration as pharmacists in Uganda,” Dr. Lutoti added.

‎Under the arrangement, pharmacy students will be required to register with the PSU through its online portal and obtain a unique student number.

‎“Each pharmacy student in Uganda must log in to the PSU Pharmacy Student Portal and self-register, providing the required information, and will be assigned a PSU Pharmacy Student Number. The deadline is 31st March every year. Registration is annual,” Dr. Lutoti said.

‎The directive also applies to Ugandans studying pharmacy abroad who intend to practice in the country.

‎“Ugandans training overseas who wish to register as pharmacists in Uganda should also log in and register,” he added.

‎Graduates will be subjected to qualifying examinations set by the PSU Council before they can be fully registered as pharmacists.

‎“Following completion of the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme or its equivalent, the holder will sit qualifying examinations set by the PSU Council. We have two sets of exams: Pre-Internship Exams held in January and June, and Post-Internship Exams held in February and August,” Dr. Lutoti said.

‎The society added that the structure and conduct of the examinations, as well as internship requirements, will be guided by the council.

‎The PSU said the accreditation framework is part of its mandate “to secure the highest practicable standards of pharmacy practice in Uganda.”
