
KARUMA.Three Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff died Sunday evening after the vehicle they were travelling in hit an elephant along the Gulu-Kampala Highway near Karuma.
The accident happened near Murchison Falls National Park, an area known for occasional wildlife crossings.
Reports indicate the officials were travelling in a white passenger van when an elephant crossed onto the highway and was hit. Witnesses said the injured animal became aggressive after the impact, charged at the vehicle, overturned it, and trapped the occupants inside.
Videos from the scene showed the badly damaged van lying overturned by the roadside as residents and motorists rushed to respond.
Among the deceased is Robert Wamala Lumanyika, a URA tax educator widely known for his work on public tax awareness campaigns and educational programs.He previously worked at the defunct WBS TV as a presenter . Unfortunately, Lumanyika , a journalist by profession tragically lost three of his relatives in a motor crash in Luweero recently .
By press time Monday morning, both Police and URA were yet to release statements about the incident.
