Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth has pledged to support efforts to address the shortage of accommodation for female students at Makerere University.

Oboth made the commitment during a meeting with Makerere University Guild leaders who paid a courtesy visit to Parliament.

The delegation was led by Guild Speaker Mutatiina Travis Muhwezi and Deputy Guild Speaker Evas Akello, who presented several concerns affecting students, including welfare and policy issues.

The shortage of accommodation for female students was among the key issues raised by the guild leaders.

Oboth commended the student leaders for bringing the matter to Parliament and said the House would give priority to any funding proposal aimed at expanding accommodation for female students.

He assured the guild leadership that Parliament would expeditiously consider a funding request for the construction or expansion of female student hostels at the university.

The Speaker’s commitment comes amid concerns over limited student accommodation at Makerere, with many students relying on private hostels and other off-campus housing arrangements.

The guild leaders said expanding university accommodation would help address some of the welfare challenges facing female students and improve their learning environment.
