Kampala chosen to host UNESCO engineering conference


KAMPALA.

Uganda has been chosen to host the 11th United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Africa Engineering Week and the 9th Africa Engineering Conference.


The conference brings together engineering professionals, academia, and industry leaders from Africa and beyond.


The event scheduled for September 14-20, 2025 will take place at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo, Kampala,
It will be under the theme, “Leverage Engineering Innovations and Technology to Accelerate Africa’s Socio-Economic Transformation.”


Organised by the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) with support from Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the event will focus on sustainable engineering solutions for Africa’s development challenges, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation.


According to UNESCO, Africa Engineering Week plays a vital role in sustainable development, and inspires students to pursue engineering by integrating practical applications into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.


“Engineering plays a pivotal role in Africa’s development. The very innovative nature of engineering offers promising solutions to Africa’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, rapid urbanisation, and inadequate infrastructure, thereby fostering sustainable development, economic growth, and improved public health,” the statement posted on UNESCO website reads in part
The event is aimed at increasing the participation of young people and women in engineering, promoting collaboration among African countries to tackle common engineering and infrastructure challenges.


The newly appointed UTB Executive Director, Juliana Kagwa said that the 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 9th African Engineering Conference are landmark events designed to elevate the role of engineering in solving Africa’s greatest challenges.


She noted that the event will bring together engineers, innovators, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the continent to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders
