
Gulu, Uganda – August 11, 2025 – The Gulu 7s tournament delivered thrilling upsets as Avengers and Toyota Buffaloes claimed the women’s and men’s Cup Finals, respectively, shaking up the 2025 Nile Special Uganda Rugby 7s Series.
Women’s Final: Avengers Dethrone Thunderbirds
In a dramatic women’s final, Avengers staged a stunning comeback to defeat series leaders Thunderbirds 14-10. Trailing at halftime after a try from Thunderbirds’ Sandra Amoli Lona, Avengers roared back with tries from Juliet Nandawula and Maimuna Nassozi. Nassozi’s two clutch conversions proved decisive, securing a 14-5 lead. Despite a late sprint from Comfort Anganyika, Thunderbirds couldn’t close the gap, relinquishing their Gulu 7s title from last year.
Maimuna Nassozi earned the women’s MVP award for her pivotal performance.

Men’s Final: Buffaloes Outmuscle Walukuba
The men’s final saw Toyota Buffaloes dominate Walukuba Barbarians to claim the title at Kyadondo Rugby Club. Captain Fat Moses Watmon’s try broke the deadlock, and Walukuba’s repeated handling errors sealed their fate, ending their hopes of a second consecutive Cup Final victory.
Liam Walker of Buffaloes was named men’s MVP for his standout performance.
