Tourism trainers have been urged to embrace technology and digital tools to prepare Uganda’s workforce for a rapidly evolving industry, as the country pushes for a ten-fold expansion in tourism.
The call was made during the 6th Bi-Annual Private Sector CEO Tourism Retreat in Fort Portal, where industry leaders, government officials, and investors gathered under the theme: “Transforming Uganda into a Preferred Tourism Destination.”
Richard Kawere, Principal of the Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC), said the sector cannot achieve its ambitious targets without a new generation of workers skilled in digital service delivery. He noted that integrating technology into training will better equip graduates to meet international standards and shifting consumer expectations.
Kawere added that HTTC is building partnerships with local hospitality businesses and international institutions to raise training quality. These include certification programs with the American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute (AHLEI) and exchange opportunities with Kenya’s Boma Hospitality College.
Beyond training, the retreat is tackling broader priorities such as public–private investment, infrastructure development, tourism safety, and product diversification. Stakeholder dialogues and creative workshops with media and content creators have also been part of the program, aimed at sharpening Uganda’s image as a competitive destination.
The retreat will close with resolutions to accelerate Uganda’s tourism transformation, with President Yoweri Museveni expected to officiate at the final session.
