2026 RACE: Five cleared to challenge Museveni as Mugisha Muntu joins race

KAMPALA . The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential flagbearer, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu O has finally been cleared to get nominated and take part in next year’s General Elections.
Gen Muntu will be nominated today, September 24, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. by the Electoral Commission (EC).


In a statement on Tuesday, ANT leadership said the flag bearer had successfully met all legal requirements, including submitting valid lists of supporters from at least 98 districts across Uganda, as stipulated under the Presidential Elections Act. A verification report issued by the EC on September 23 confirmed his clearance.


“We are pleased to announce that our Presidential Candidate, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has officially been cleared for nomination. We thank all our supporters for their unwavering and steadfast commitment,” ANT stated.

Gen. Muntu, a former army commander and ex-president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), broke away in 2018 to form ANT, positioning the party as an alternative opposition force built on values of discipline, integrity, and institutional reform.

This is going to be his second attempt to unseat President Museveni who has been in power for 40 years . So far three candidates have been nominated including Museveni , Robert Kasibante of Uganda Peasants Party and Elton Joseph Mabirizi of Conservative Party .

Today , three more candidates including National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine ,Forum for Democratic Change’s Nathan Nandala Mafabi and Gen Mugisha Muntu of ANT are set for nominations .

The Electoral Commission will close presidential nominations later today, after which the final list of candidates for next year’s General Elections will be confirmed.
