Rtd Col Dr. Kiiza Besigye who is facing treason charges with his aide Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya have petitioned High Court seeking to be released on bail pending their committal to High Court
According to an application filed by their lawyers, the duo have listed a number of grounds which they asked court to consider and release them on bail.
These contend, that offences against them are only bailable by the High Court.
“The 1st Applicant (Besigye) and the 2nd Applicant (Kamulegeya ) are responsible citizens of Uganda who have permanent places of abode at Buyinja LC1 Wampeewo Ward Kasangati Town
Council Wakiso District and Rwakabengo A Rwakabengo Ward Southern Division Rukungiri Municipality in Rukungiri District for the 1st Applicant and Kisigula Village Cell Mutundwe Ward Gombolola Ssabagabo Makindye Wakiso District for the 2nd Applicant.”
That they are not a threat to any investigative or other process and are willing to appear before this Honorable Court for mention or trial as and when required once
released on bail.
“The Applicants have not been committed to the High Court for trial and are willing to comply with all reasonable conditions set for their admittance to bail.”
That , the Applicants are of advanced aged and have substantial sureties who are willing
to ensure compliance with bail conditions once the Applicants are released on bail.
It’s from the above grounds that they asked High court to release them on bail.
On 21st February 2025 the Applicants were charged with treason and misprision of
treason at the Chief Magistrates Court of Nakawa at Nakawa and remanded them to Luzira Prison
