Liberty, Stanbic and Safeboda Join Forces to Launch Affordable “Protecta Bode” Car Insurance

A new partnership between Liberty General Insurance Uganda, Stanbic Bank, and SafeBoda has introduced an innovative car insurance product dubbed Protecta Bode, designed to bridge the gap between basic third-party coverage and costly comprehensive motor insurance.

The product was officially launched at Sheraton Kampala and will initially target SafeCar drivers, with wider rollout expected to follow. Protecta Bode offers protection for vehicle body repairs, third-party liability, and medical benefits for drivers, creating a middle-ground option for motorists who have often settled for limited coverage due to affordability challenges.

“This is about making insurance relatable and attainable,” said Peter Makhanu, Managing Director of Liberty General Insurance Uganda. “With Protecta Bode, motorists can now access broader cover than third-party insurance at a fraction of the cost of comprehensive policies.”

Premiums will be charged at 1.5 percent of a vehicle’s market value, and repairs will be carried out at Liberty-approved garages to ensure quality. The model is expected to give drivers greater peace of mind, particularly in urban areas where accident rates remain high.

Stanbic Bank will provide the bancassurance channel to simplify access for customers. Samuel Mwogeza, Executive Director and Head of Personal & Private Banking, said the collaboration reflects Stanbic’s focus on innovative solutions. “Through bancassurance, we are enabling more Ugandans to secure protection quickly and conveniently,” he noted.

For SafeBoda, the new product aligns with its vision of expanding services beyond motorcycles. Christian Wamambe, Country Director, explained that while Protecta Bode is starting with cars, it ties into SafeBoda’s broader mission of supporting driver welfare and promoting road safety.

As part of the launch, the three partners also pledged to support road safety initiatives through SafeBoda’s Driver Academy and community projects such as zebra crossings and improved road signage.

With Uganda’s motor insurance penetration still low, the Protecta Bode partnership is being billed as a potential game changer, offering motorists reliable coverage at a price point designed for the local market.
