Transport Ministry kicks off consultations ahead of mandatory vehicle inspection rollout


KAMPALA.The Ministry of Works and Transport has started conducting consultations with various stakeholders ahead of roll out of Uganda’s mandatory vehicle inspection programme.


The programme is aimed at improving road safety standards.
Among the key road safety stakeholders being targeted include civil society organizations.
The engagement, held at the Namanve Motor Vehicle Inspection Facility, gave participants a firsthand look at the automated inspection process that will soon be applied to all vehicles in the country.


During the session, Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, Winstone Katushabe, and his technical team demonstrated the facility’s advanced automated systems designed to assess critical vehicle safety components such as brakes, suspension, lighting systems, and other essential features.


“The primary goal of these engagements is to ensure that all stakeholders are well-informed and prepared for the upcoming mandatory vehicle inspections,” Katushabe said.


“We are committed to promoting road safety by ensuring that vehicles on our roads meet the required safety standards.”
According to the Ministry, the initial phase of the rollout will target Government of Uganda vehicles.


Officials explained that this phased approach is intended to provide adequate time for sensitization and capacity building among stakeholders before the inspection program is implemented nationwide.


The automated inspection initiative forms part of MoWT’s broader strategy to enhance road safety, minimize vehicle-related accidents, and enforce compliance with national transport regulations.


By integrating modern technology into the inspection process, the Ministry aims to increase efficiency, reduce human error, and ensure that only roadworthy vehicles operate on Uganda’s roads.


Stakeholders who attended the engagement welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism that the program will significantly improve vehicle safety standards and contribute to safer road transport across the country.


Recently , Transport and Works Minister Gen Edward Katumba Wamala said explained that mandatory vehicle inspection will first be piloted within government fleets before rolling out to the general public.


Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will face the strictest enforcement, while private motorists will be encouraged to voluntarily seek inspection for their own safety.
