Accidents: Govt clears 16 buses of suspended YY bus company

KAMPALA

Government through the Ministry of Works and Transport has cleared 16 buses belonging to YY Bus Company to resume operations .
This follows a prolonged suspension, beyond the initial 15 days, meant to allow thorough investigations and a comprehensive compliance audit after two buses belonging to the company got involved in two fatal crashes with one of the buses catching fire .

Also, a total of 15 YY bus company s drivers have also been directed to undergo mandatory refresher driving training at the government Motor Vehicle Inspection Station in Namanve, Wakiso District.
Speaking to Monitor, the Ministry of Works and Transport’s Senior Communications Officer, Mr Allan Ssempebwa, explained that the number of buses returning to the road was determined by how many drivers fulfilled all the necessary requirements.

“So far, 31 buses have passed the test. However, of those 31, only about 16 drivers have been cleared, and the rest will have to go for another refresher training. That’s why only 16 buses have been released back on the road,” he said.
He added, “As others continue with refresher training, inspections of the remaining buses will also proceed. It’s an ongoing exercise that’s not yet complete, and we will notify the public as soon as it is concluded.”

YY Coach Bus Company operates a fleet of 66 buses, all of which must undergo the Ministry of Works and Transport’s newly initiated comprehensive mechanical inspection.
On May 14, 2025, Junior Transport Minister Mr Fred Byamukama ordered the suspension of YY bus company operations following two serious road crashes involving the company’s buses.

As part of the conditions for resumption, Minister Byamukama directed that all buses be subjected to thorough mechanical inspections to confirm their roadworthiness. He also instructed the company to submit appointment letters of their drivers to ensure that only accredited and qualified ones are reassigned roles .
