KAMPALA. The Inspectorate of Government has arrested Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Ambassador Herbert Kiguli, over allegations that he caused a financial loss of Shs494.1 million to the government.

According to the Inspectorate of Government, Kiguli, 59, was arrested over the alleged loss of Shs494,097,270.

The IG said Ambassodor Kiguli is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court today,Monday to face charges related to the alleged financial loss.

Kiguli is Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Kenya. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official website identifies him as the head of Uganda’s consulate there.

The consulate has been involved in promoting Uganda’s economic, commercial and tourism interests on the Kenyan coast, with Kiguli taking part in several official engagements in recent months.

The arrest follows previous scrutiny of Kiguli over alleged financial liabilities. A 2023 publication carrying an Inspectorate of Government list showed an outstanding amount of Shs461.897 million attributed to a person identified as Herbert Kiguli, although the document does not by itself establish that the amount is the same matter cited in the latest arrest.

The allegations against Kiguli remain subject to determination by the courts.
