KIBUKU: The Antiochian Orthodox Catholic Church (AOCC) in Uganda is constructing a multi-billion-shilling church in Kagumu, Kibuku District, as part of efforts to expand its presence and provide better facilities for worshippers in the Eastern Region.

The development was highlighted during celebrations marking 25 years of Mother Mary AOCC Kagumu, where the church’s presiding Bishop, Jacinto Kibuuka, thanked the congregation, clergy, government and other supporters for contributing to the growth of the church.

The new church building, which is currently at the roofing stage, will accommodate more than 1,500 worshippers when completed.

Bishop Kibuuka said the 25-year journey of Mother Mary Kagumu has contributed to the establishment of more than 30 churches across the Eastern Region, describing the growth as a sign of the church’s expanding ministry.

He also urged parents to take greater responsibility for raising their children and instilling good morals, particularly during the ongoing school holiday.

Bishop Kibuuka said parents should use the holiday period to guide their children and protect them from negative influences that could undermine their character and future.

He further announced that AOCC will hold a priestly ordination ceremony on August 30, 2026, at Mamre International Prayer Centre in Namugongo-Janda.

The prayer centre will also mark its 10th anniversary on November 29, 2026.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Moses Lyomwoki, Vicar General of the Eastern Region and parish priest of Mother Mary Kagumu, expressed gratitude to God and Bishop Kibuuka for the support extended to the parish throughout its 25-year journey.

Fr. Lyomwoki said the anniversary had provided an opportunity to celebrate the transformation of lives, testimonies from worshippers, the development of schools and the construction of the new church.

He said the achievements demonstrate the growth of Mother Mary Kagumu and the wider AOCC ministry in Eastern Uganda.
