In a strategic move aimed at reinforcing the growth of football in Uganda, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed Bashir Mutyaba as the new Football Development Director. His appointment takes effect on August 1, 2025, replacing Ali Mwebe, who has taken up a new role with FIFA as a Regional Technical Consultant.
Mutyaba, a long-serving football administrator and certified CAF instructor, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as FUFA’s Youth Football Development Manager and has been instrumental in shaping youth competitions, talent identification programs, and coaching initiatives across the country.
“Bashir’s appointment is a continuation of our vision to develop football from the grassroots level, focusing on technical growth, youth pathways, and institutional strengthening,” said FUFA President Moses Magogo in a statement.
His promotion comes at a time when FUFA is placing strong emphasis on preparing for the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania this August. Mutyaba’s leadership will be critical in aligning Uganda’s technical development efforts with continental and global standards.
Among his top priorities will be expanding grassroots and school football programs, improving coaching education structures, and strengthening the national technical strategy for player development. FUFA has encouraged clubs, academies, regional associations, and government stakeholders to support Mutyaba as he takes on this pivotal role.
“I am honoured by the trust placed in me by FUFA,” Mutyaba said in a brief statement. “This is a responsibility I take with both humility and urgency. My focus is on creating sustainable systems that will serve Ugandan football for generations.”
Football pundits have welcomed the move, noting that Mutyaba’s institutional knowledge and proven track record make him a fitting choice to carry forward FUFA’s football development agenda. His appointment is also seen as a nod to continuity, ensuring the programs initiated under Mwebe’s leadership are built upon rather than restarted.
As Uganda eyes a strong performance in CHAN 2024 and sets sights on hosting the AFCON 2027, the development of local talent, coaches, and football infrastructure remains central to FUFA’s mission.
