NDEJJE: Police have confirmed the shooting of a boda boda rider in Kanaaba, Ndejje, Makindye-Ssabagabo, during enforcement of the second National Cleaning Day.

The deceased, identified as Jjuuko, was reportedly shot after allegedly riding through the restricted movement period that began at 7:00am.

According to eyewitnesses, the rider attempted to evade security officers after being stopped, prompting one of the officers to fire.

Hassan Ssezi, a resident of Kanaaba, said officers were stationed at a road corner when the rider approached the area at high speed.

The officer who allegedly fired the shot has been identified as Police Constable Ogwal. He was reportedly taken away from the scene by fellow officers and detained at Ndejje Police Post as investigations continue.

The deceased’s body was transported to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed that the officer had been arrested to facilitate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The incident comes after police issued warnings ahead of the National Cleaning Day enforcement, urging members of the public to comply with restrictions and cooperate with security personnel deployed to enforce the directive.

Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma had cautioned the public against confronting security officers, warning that confrontations could lead to arrests and the use of force.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
