
Delegates from different parts of the country have endorsed the Nyendo-Mukungwe Municipality legislator Mathias Mpuuga as the first president of the newly formed Democratic Front (DF) .
DF rebranded this month from Green Partisan Party (GPP) , one of the 26 dormant parties registered with the Electoral Commission (EC).
During the party’s inaugural national delegate’s conference at Laston Gardens in Masaka City Thursday, over 700 delegates unanimously endorsed Mr Mpuuga and the entire National Executive Committee without going through competitive elections.
Mpuuga , currently a Commissioner of Parliament , will be deputized by four deputy presidents representing regions, including Mr Pascal Amuriat for Eastern region, and Hajji Abnoor Kyammundu who defected from Justice Forum Party(JEEMA) as the vice president for Buganda.
Other notable names endorsed for various responsibilities in DF include Dr. Abed Bwanika, the member of Parliament for Kimaanya/Kabonera Municipality as the party treasurer, Ms Juliet Kakande, the Masaka City Woman legislator is the party’s Women leader.
Veteran politician Samuel Lubega Mukaaku was elected as the national DF chairperson while former Makindye East legislator Mr Michael Mabikke and former Rubaga North legislator Moses Kasibante were endorsed as secretary general, and information and publicity secretary respectively.
Speaking to delegates , Mr Mpuuga said DF is not focused on winning positions in next year General Elections ,but pushing for a leveled grounded for all political actors .

“Those focusing on mere positions are playing in the hands of the regime , the winner of the 2026 General election is already determined . This opportunity you’ve given us is to build a monument of our existence, we know what to do and we shall build a strong party that will survive the test of time to lead the efforts of reforming the political terrain of Uganda after next year’s polls ,” he noted.
Mr Michael Mbwatekamwa, the MP for Entebbe Municipality and former member of National Unity Platform(NUP) , said that their newly formed political party will bring sanity back in the opposition politics of Uganda.
“Several people have given up the struggle due to malice, politics of misunderstandings and fighting each other without concrete reasons; however, we’re looking forward to working with other tolerant political players in the opposition,” he said
Delegates made a number of resolutions including working with collective opposition to ensure release of all political prisoners including veteran political Dr. Kizza Besigye, pursuing electoral reforms among others.
The conference will be concluded today with the official launch of the party.
