
BUSHENYI.Police in Bushenyi District are investigating an Electoral Commission Returning Officer who reportedly knocked dead four buffaloes inside Queen Elizabeth National Park along the Kasese–Mbarara highway late Friday night.
The crash happened near Kikorongo, an area known for frequent wildlife crossings.
According to eyewitnesses, the returning officer who was recently posted to Bushenyi District first visited a drinking joint in Kasese Town before embarking on his journey to Bushenyi .
“ The EC officer was the one driving himself a, he was posted to Bushenyi a week ago after being transferred from Bundibugyo District,” an eyewitness said
Images from the scene show the mangled government vehicle, registration UG 0794B, with its front completely destroyed and the bonnet crushed inward, suggesting a high-impact collision.
Nearby, the carcasses of four buffaloes lie on the tarmac in pools of blood, while pieces of debris and twisted metal are scattered across the road.
Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers confirmed that all four buffaloes died instantly.
The vehicle has since been towed to Kasese Central Police Station as investigations continue.
The incident has raised concern among wildlife and transport officials over reckless driving through protected areas, especially at night.
Queen Elizabeth National Park, a major tourist destination, has increasingly recorded cases of speeding and careless driving on its public road corridors.
