Embrace innovation, integrity and interdisciplinary learning -Victoria varsity chancellor urges graduates

KAMPALA. The Chancellor of Victoria University, Prof. John Opuda-Asibo, has called on graduates to uphold strong character, embrace innovation, and lead with integrity as they enter the world beyond academia.

He made the remarks during the university’s 9th graduation ceremony held in Kampala under the theme “Shaping the Future.”

Addressing the graduates, parents, and dignitaries including Members of Parliament, Vice Chancellors from various institutions, and officials from the Uganda Police Force, Prof. Opuda-Asibo said education remains a transformative force that changes individuals, families, and nations.

“Education is a noble pursuit one that transforms individuals, families, and nations. Whoever ignores education ignores the nation,” he said.

Before his main address, the Chancellor led the congregation in honoring three distinguished members of the Victoria University family who passed on Mr Rajiv Ruparelia, a dedicated member of the Board and University Council; Mr Joram Francis Kahene, the former Chairman of the University Council; and Dr. Issa Seroda, a senior lecturer and head of postgraduate training and research in the Faculty of Business and Management.

“Their leadership and kindness touched many lives, and their legacy continues to inspire all of us,” Prof. Opuda-Asibo said, as the audience observed a moment of silence in their memory.

Reflecting on Victoria University’s journey, Prof. Opuda-Asibo commended its steady growth since its establishment. He said the institution has matured into a trailblazer in innovation and technology-driven education.

“Victoria University has distinguished itself through its learner-centered approach and flexible delivery model, producing graduates who are not only employable but capable of creating jobs and leading with integrity,” he noted.

He emphasized the need to consolidate the growth and development of graduate studies as a sign of institutional maturity.

“We are now a mature university. As we move forward, we must reaffirm our mission to produce future-ready graduates — equipped with digital competence, moral clarity, and the spirit of innovation,” he said.

Prof. Opuda-Asibo lauded the University Council and management for steering the institution toward academic and technological excellence. However, he urged them to ensure accountability and measurable impact in their leadership.

“Our governance must remain accountable, our partnerships meaningful, and our impact measurable,” he emphasized.

He also encouraged faculty to adopt interdisciplinary teaching and research approaches to address complex challenges such as climate change, health crises, and technological disruptions.

“The most complex challenges of our time cannot be solved within the walls of a single discipline. They demand collaboration across faculties and the blending of theory and practice,” he explained.

In his message to the graduates, Prof. Opuda-Asibo underscored the importance of character, perseverance, and self-belief.

“There is nothing more important than your character. Don’t doubt yourself — believe in yourself,” he told the graduates.

He reminded them that they are the future leaders and change-makers, not passive participants waiting for others to shape the world.

“Don’t look for anybody else; you are the one,” he said. “Particularly for us in Africa, we must stop thinking that others are in charge. You are the future.”
