The High Court has ruled that Molly Bunanukye Katanga has a case to answer in the death of her husband, prominent Kampala businessman Henry Katanga.
In a decision delivered by Rosette Comfort Kania, the court found that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to require Katanga to enter her defense. The judge directed that she formally respond to the charges and explain the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
Henry Katanga was found dead at the couple’s home in Kampala on November 2, 2023. Prosecutors allege that Molly Katanga was the last person to see him alive in their bedroom on the night of November 1 before he was discovered with fatal gunshot wounds the following morning.
The case has drawn widespread public attention since the businessman’s death, with investigators initially treating the matter as suspicious before charges were brought against the widow. The prosecution maintains that the evidence placed before court links her to the incident, while the defense has previously indicated it will challenge the state’s account of events.
By ruling that there is a case to answer, the court has not pronounced Katanga guilty but determined that the evidence on record warrants a defense. She will now have the opportunity to present her side, call witnesses if she chooses, or give sworn or unsworn testimony as the trial proceeds.
