LUWERO — The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged families across the kingdom to embrace cattle rearing as part of efforts to improve household incomes and strengthen economic self-reliance.
Mayiga made the call while commissioning the Muteesa II Health Centre at Kalasa-Makulubita in Luwero District. The event was held under the Buganda Kingdom’s “Ssitula Omutindo” programme, an initiative that promotes excellence and value addition in all sectors of development.
The Katikkiro encouraged households to invest in agriculture by maintaining banana and coffee plantations while also participating in the “Ente ya Kabaka” campaign, which seeks to revive cattle keeping as a source of food security, income and improved livelihoods.
He said the initiative is part of the kingdom’s broader strategy to empower families economically and encourage sustainable development at the grassroots.
Speaking at the event, the Buganda Minister for Education, Health and the Nabagereka’s Office, Owek. Cotrida Nakatte, reaffirmed the kingdom’s commitment to improving healthcare services.
She urged residents to take preventive measures against malaria, emphasizing the importance of sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets and seeking timely medical care to reduce malaria-related illnesses and deaths.
Meanwhile, Bulemeezi County Chief Ronald Mulondo commended Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for prioritizing development in the region.
Mulondo noted that the kingdom has invested significantly in Bulemeezi through the construction of health centres, schools and vocational training institutions, projects he said have improved access to essential services and created more opportunities for local communities.
The commissioning of the Muteesa II Health Centre is expected to enhance access to healthcare for residents of Kalasa-Makulubita and surrounding areas while complementing the kingdom’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of its subjects through health, education and economic empowerment initiatives.
