KAMPALA — The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged Members of Parliament to remain focused on serving their constituents rather than seeking personal favours, saying lawmakers have a greater responsibility to address the needs of the people they represent.
Mayiga made the remarks while meeting a delegation from Mukono South Constituency, led by the area’s Member of Parliament, Robert Maseruka, who paid a courtesy visit to Bulange, Mengo, following his victory in the recent parliamentary elections.
The Katikkiro encouraged legislators to dedicate their time and energy to fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities instead of becoming preoccupied with matters outside their mandate.
He observed that some MPs often divert their attention from the issues affecting their constituencies, a practice he said undermines effective representation and service delivery.
Mayiga also cautioned newly elected legislators against becoming carried away by excessive praise or popularity among supporters, warning that pride can negatively affect leadership and political careers if not properly managed.
During the meeting, MP Robert Maseruka thanked the Katikkiro for the audience and sought his guidance on effective leadership and public service.
The legislator pledged to work closely with the Buganda Kingdom in promoting development initiatives and advancing programmes that improve the welfare of the people in Mukono South and the kingdom at large.
