KAMPALA: Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) leaders have raised concerns over alleged attempts to sell or misuse land belonging to public schools in the city, calling for investigations to protect public assets.
Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga raised the concerns while addressing the first ordinary council meeting held at City Hall, Kampala.
Balimwezo warned Members of Parliament, technocrats and school governing bodies against engaging in transactions involving school land, urging those involved in any illegal activities to stop before investigations expose them.
He also called for a review of the national cleaning day programme, arguing that its implementation lacks clear policy guidelines.
According to the Lord Mayor, KCCA had initially planned to introduce a city-wide initiative in which residents would dedicate at least one hour to cleaning their homes and surrounding areas. However, he said the central government adopted the idea without adequate consultation and a clear framework to guide its implementation.
Balimwezo further criticised the technical wing of KCCA over what he described as inadequate funding and facilitation of senior political offices, saying the situation affects their ability to effectively execute their responsibilities and improve service delivery.
Meanwhile, Kampala Resident City Commissioner Hajji Muhammad Lule Mawiya said investigations into allegations surrounding school land and administration are ongoing.
He said authorities would consider recommendations arising from the investigations, including a possible decision regarding the head teacher of Old Kampala Senior Secondary School.
In a related development, Nakawa Division councillor Hajji Ali condemned corruption among city leaders and public officials.
He pledged to continue challenging corrupt practices and called on leaders to uphold accountability in the management of public resources.
The leaders urged relevant authorities to strengthen oversight of school land and other public assets to prevent their illegal disposal and ensure they remain available for the benefit of future generations.
