KAMPALA.
President Museveni has announced that Cabinet will not convene on Monday as it usually does and also there will be no plenary session of Parliament .
This , Mr Museveni said will allow NRM members time to take part in the party village elections taking place on Tuesday . NRM has the numerical strength in Parliament with 342 out of the total 556 legislators –meaning their absence in the House paralyses all parliamentary businesses .
“…there will be no Cabinet meeting on Monday, the 5th of May, 2025 and I have also agreed with the Rt. Hon. Speaker that there will be no Parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, the 6th of May, 2025,” the President posted on his microblogging site X formerly Twitter on Saturday evening
Prior to the internal party elections , Mr Museveni said NRM members will take part in a baraza that will verify genuine members that have been registered in the party registers and later participate in the elections of the NRM LCI flag-bearer for LCI chairmanship and also elect the village NRM structures which will end by 2pm on Tuesday .
“The two activities – register verification and electing LCI NRM flag-bearers and the NRM structures-should strictly take place between 10am and 2pm. The NRM Electoral commission will give you the details.
Surprisingly ,this publication has learnt that in many villages ,incumbent NRM village leaders have already selected themselves for another term with holding formal elections .
“ I will personally be in the Rwakitura Village and Maama will be in Ntungamo Ireenga to take part in the verification of our respective NRM, village registers,” he said
However ,the President said he will not personally participate in electing party leaders at the village level since he holds the office of national party chairperson .
“I will, however, not line behind any candidate for election because as chairman of the NRM, I welcome any choice of our members. I cannot and should not, therefore, take sides.” He added
NRM boasts of 20.7million members though this figure being disputed by the Opposition politicians who say it was inflated to hoodwink the public and election observers that the party which has been in power for nearly four decades still has popular support .
Last month , NRM leadership announced that they had increased nomination fees for all party members intending to contest for elective positions in the party primaries . Under the new rates, those aspiring for the position of national chairperson will part with Shs20m, up from Shs10m.

Those vying for the position of 1st National Vice Chairperson (male) and 2nd National Vice Chairperson (female) will pay Shs10m up from Shs5m. Aspiring MPs are expected to pay Shs3m. They previously paid Shs2m while those contesting for President will be required to pay Shs20m. NRM District City chairpersons, who were previously paying Shs200,000, will now pay Shs500,000.
Lord councillors will part with Shs1m, away from Shs200,000 they were previously paying. The money ,according to party leadership is meant to finance the forthcoming party activities ahead of the general elections.
