KAMPALA — Renowned media panelist Charles Rwomushana was reportedly arrested by security personnel while appearing live on air on Radio Simba’s Gasimbagane ne Banamawulire programme on Sunday morning.

Witnesses at the radio station said several armed men, some of whom were dressed in civilian clothes, entered the premises while the programme was ongoing and proceeded to the reception area before taking Rwomushana away.

The incident reportedly caused panic among staff at the station as the security personnel first engaged the station’s security guard, identified as Nsiriha Catherine, before proceeding to the reception.

At the reception, the officers reportedly instructed the front desk manager, Christine Namubiru, and other staff to facilitate their access to the premises using the biometric system.

They then asked staff to show them the location of the reception and proceeded to where Rwomushana was conducting the live programme before arresting him.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest were not immediately clear, and authorities had not, by press time, publicly provided details on the reason for his detention.

However, the arrest comes amid ongoing court proceedings in the treason case involving opposition figures Dr Kizza Besigye and Abed Lutale.

Court proceedings have reportedly mentioned Rwomushana in relation to allegations that he had information about an alleged plot to overthrow the government but did not disclose it to the relevant authorities.

It remains unclear whether the reported arrest is connected to the allegations arising from the treason proceedings.

Efforts to establish the identity of the officers involved and obtain an official explanation for Rwomushana’s arrest were ongoing by press time.
