KABALE.Eight Senior Four students of Kigezi High School in Kabale District are behind bars for allegedly inciting violence during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said on Wednesday the suspects are being detained at Kabale Central Police Station as investigations continue.

“The arrests follow a mini-strike at the school during which windowpanes and a CCTV camera were allegedly destroyed,” Tumushime said.

He said police responded swiftly to the incident and that efforts to arrest more suspects were underway.

Tumushime added that police deployment at the school had been maintained to restore order and prevent further disruptions. He described those involved as a small group of troublemakers who should not be allowed to disrupt learning for other students.

Meanwhile, head teacher Abraham Akampurira said the arrested students were among 11 learners suspended on Monday after allegedly being caught attempting to escape from the school over the weekend.

“The students were summoned before the school disciplinary committee, which resolved to suspend them. The students later returned to the school and attempted to destabilise operations, mainly targeting security guards,” Akampurira said.

Senior Four candidates started writing the Uganda Certificate of Educations examinations early this month and the affected candidates have not yet completed the exams. This publication has learnt that the school management is working out an arrangement for the affected candidates to complete their exams.
