Collins Tanga , the son of ruling National Resistance Movement Electoral Commission Chairperson Tango Odoi has taken an early lead in the party youth league chairperson re-election conducted at districts across the country .
According to the NRM Electoral Commission vice chairperson Jachan Fred Omach, Tanga has already won with a landslide in districts of Greater Masaka, Bugisu and Busoga sub regions.
In Tororo District, where Tanga hails from , he was overwhelmingly elected, securing 61 out of 62 votes, in a largely peaceful regional election that has reignited calls for decentralized voting processes within the party.
After a delayed start and brief confusion, the NRM youth elections in Tororo concluded successfully, with Tanga clinching the position of National Chairperson of the NRM Youth League.
By 10 a.m., the Tororo Works Yard, designated for the elections, was largely empty except for security personnel guarding the two polling stations.
The 62 expected delegates from Tororo County and West Budama Counties arrived hours later, undergoing thorough vetting by security before gaining access to the heavily guarded grounds.
Voting, initially scheduled for midday, was delayed by nearly an hour after delegates refused to proceed until they received their facilitation allowances of Shs700,000 each.
Once the allowances were paid, the election resumed, resulting in a landslide victory for Tanga, who garnered 61 of the 62 votes cast, defeating nine other contenders, none of whom received any votes.
“You can’t stop reggae,” Tanga said after his win. “This victory is national, and I want to assure my fellow youths that this is their time to work.”
The Tororo election followed a chaotic national election in Kampala last month, prompting the party to decentralize voting across regions.
Unlike the Kampala vote, the Bukedi sub-region exercise was largely peaceful.
“We have not recorded any major incidents.
It has been peaceful across the seven districts of Bukedi. I thank the organizers — it was well managed,” said Rodgers Mulindwa, the supervisor in charge of the Bukedi sub-region.
The smooth conduct of the election has sparked calls for the NRM to adopt decentralized voting for future party processes.
“Look at how peaceful our youths are here. You can’t compare this to the chaos we saw in Kampala,” said Apollo Yeri Ofwono, NRM Chairperson for Tororo District.
Benard Odoi Onen, Youth MP for Eastern Uganda, echoed the sentiment: “This kind of election should be maintained. It’s cost-effective and safer than moving everyone to a central location.”
However, the NRM Secretariat maintains that centralized elections allow the party chairman to engage directly with members, despite the higher logistical costs.
While debate continues over the balance between cost and coordination, the success of the Tororo-based elections may influence the party to reconsider its approach for future youth league activities.
