Tax at Your Fingertips: URA, MTN MoMo Unveil Mobile Shortcut for Hassle Free Payments

In a bold move to simplify tax compliance and bring public services closer to citizens, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has partnered with MTN Mobile Money Uganda to roll out an enhanced digital tax payment system accessible directly through mobile phones.

Launched officially at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, the new service allows MTN subscribers across the country to pay taxes and other government fees from the comfort of their phones by dialling *165*18#. This eliminates the need for physical visits to URA offices or banks, a major barrier to compliance for many individuals and businesses especially those in remote or underserved areas.

The upgraded system is available to all MTN MoMo users, forms part of a broader government push to digitise public services and boost voluntary compliance.

Speaking at the launch, URA Commissioner General John Musinguzi Rujoki explained that simplifying the tax payment process is central to the Authority’s mission of modernising revenue collection and fostering trust between taxpayers and the government.

“Our goal is to make tax compliance as simple and convenient as possible for all taxpayers,” Rujoki said.
“Enhancing URA services on MTN MoMo brings us closer to the people and reduces compliance barriers and supports our broader strategy to digitise tax administration while improving efficiency and transparency.”

Taxpayers can now generate a Payment Registration Number (PRN) through the URA portal or mobile code, then use the MoMo menu to process payment in real time. The platform instantly confirms the transaction and updates URA records securely.

With millions of Ugandans already using mobile money, the integration is expected to ease access for traders, salaried workers, boda boda riders and small business owners, enabling them to fulfil their tax obligations without queues or paperwork.
