Togolese national dies in Masaka-Mbarara road carnage

Police in Masaka Sub region are investigating circumstances under which a Togolese national died in a Sunday traffic crash along Masaka Mbarara highway.


The deceased identified by police as Kalu Sagna Kami Nouwat died on spot while his driver Moses Mashate, a resident of Ntinda ,Kampala sustained serious injuries


The incident occurred at about 10 :40 am on Sunday at Kaganda Village in Kinoni Town Council in Lwengo District when a speeding salon car Registration Number UBA 525 M Rav4, which was coming from Masaka side heading to Mbarara switched the lane and rammed into Sino truck Registration Number UBN 926W which was coming from Mbarara side.


According to locals ,the speeding driver of the salon car lost control of the vehicle and hit the truck , killing Nouwat on spot .
“ The driver of the salon car was speeding and he failed keep in his lane thus hitting the truck head-on ,” Joshua Mukasa , an eye witness said


Southern Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said police investigations into the cause of the crash are underway , warning motorists and other road users against abusing traffic rules and regulations.
“Motorists are urged to always be cautious and steady while using the road to avoid such incidents .

We can avert such crashes if motorists avoid their reckless behaviors while on the road” he said
Kasirye said police took the deceased’s body to Masaka regional referral hospital mortuary for postmortem and the vehicle that were involved in the crash were towed to Kinoni police station as investigation into the cause of the accident goes on.


In a related incident, eight people were rushed to hospital in critical condition after the vehicle they were traveling in got involved in a road crash in Kyotera District.


The incident at Kumi namunna in Kalisizo Town Council in Kyotera District along Masaka Kyotera Road.
According to eyewitnesses ,the driver of the commuter taxi registration number UBN 114 lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road forcing the vehicle to overturn several times .


Police have identified the injured people as Matovu Gasta, Patrick Lubega, Yusuf Kagolo, Boaz Kayonga, Kayima Benon, Sarah Nabungye, Deborah Nakamogga and Rabaka Nakabito.


Mr Kasirye said police are hunting for the driver of the commuter taxi who caused the crash.
“The injured people were rushed to Kalisizo hospital where they are undergoing treatment, we wish to remind the people using this road which is under construction to be cautious while using the road and avoid speeding because such single crashes are caused by speeding and reckless driving”. He added.
