UCC rolls out countrywide crackdown on Illegal WiFi service providers

By Joseph Kiggundu

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced a countrywide crackdown on unlicensed operators providing illegal public WiFi hotspot services across the country.

The regulator said the move, carried out with licensed internet service providers and other government agencies, is aimed at protecting consumers, improving accountability, and safeguarding critical communications infrastructure.

UCC warned that unauthorised providers expose users to unreliable service, data privacy risks, and cyber threats, urging individuals and businesses to regularize their operations or stop altogether. It also advised the public to use only licensed providers, verify them on the UCC website, and report illegal services through its toll-free line 0800222777.
