Grief as Police officer knocked dead in Iganga

KAMPALA.A police officer, Sgt. James Kirinde of Makuutu Police Station in Bugweri District, was tragically killed in a road accident in Iganga on Friday, shortly after escorting examination materials to Iganga Police Station.

According to ASP Michael Kasadha, Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga East, the fatal accident occurred at Buseyi along the Iganga–Tororo highway and involved a motorcycle and a motor vehicle Isuzu Forward.

Preliminary investigations indicate that both the motorcycle and the truck were travelling in the same direction towards Nakalama.

“Upon reaching near SANA Hotel, the Isuzu truck reportedly rammed the motorcycle from behind, killing Sgt Kirinde instantly, ” Said Mr Kasadha on Saturday.

Sgt Kirinde was a passenger on the motorcycle while returning to Bugweri after escorting examination materials to Iganga Police Station.

Police said that the driver of the Isuzu truck fled the scene immediately following the accident and is currently being sought by police.

Traffic officers from Iganga Central Police Station visited the scene, documented evidence, and took the body of the deceased to Nakavule Hospital Mortuary for postmortem. Both the truck and motorcycle have been impounded at Iganga Police Station for further investigations.

Police have appealed to the public to assist in locating the driver and called for road users to exercise caution along busy highways.
