Nankabirwa Praises UNOC’s 10-Year Impact as Uganda’s Oil Sector Gains Momentum

Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa has commended the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) for its contribution to the growth and direction of the country’s oil and gas sector as the company marks ten years of operation.

Speaking during the event to celebrate UNOC’s 10th anniversary, Nankabirwa said the state owned company has played a critical role in laying the foundation for Uganda’s emergence as a future oil producing nation. She noted that UNOC’s steady growth reflects the country’s commitment to ensuring that petroleum resources are developed in a way that benefits Ugandans.

Established to manage the government’s commercial interests in the petroleum industry, UNOC has evolved into a key player across Uganda’s oil and gas value chain. Over the past decade, the company has been actively involved in major national projects, including the Tilenga and Kingfisher oil developments, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, strategic storage infrastructure and the development of the Kabaale Industrial Park.

Nankabirwa praised UNOC’s leadership and workforce for steering the company through complex industry demands while maintaining focus on national interests.

“Over the years, UNOC has demonstrated professionalism, resilience and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that Ugandans fully benefit from our oil and gas sector,” the minister said.

She added that the progress made by UNOC has been supported by strong policy direction and collaboration across government institutions, Parliament and industry stakeholders. The minister also acknowledged the role of President Yoweri Museveni in providing strategic guidance that has shaped the company’s development since its establishment.

As Uganda moves closer to first oil production, Nankabirwa said UNOC’s mandate will remain central to safeguarding national interests, strengthening local capacity and promoting responsible and sustainable exploitation of petroleum resources.
