Catholic Faith Pay Tribute to Cardinal Wamala’s Lifelong Service at 99

The Catholic Church in Uganda has formally honoured Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala recognising nearly a century of life marked by deep faith, pastoral leadership and service to both Church and country.

The tribute held days after the cardinal marked his 99th birthday brought together senior clergy, religious leaders and members of the faithful who described him as a spiritual pillar whose influence has shaped generations of Catholics in Uganda.

Church leaders reflected on Cardinal Wamala’s long journey in ministry highlighting his years as Archbishop of Kampala and his elevation to the College of Cardinals in 1994 by Pope John Paul II. Speakers noted that his leadership was defined by humility, firm doctrine and a commitment to unity within the Church.

Born in Kamaggwa in Masaka Diocese, Cardinal Wamala was ordained a priest in 1957 before rising through the Church’s ranks. Over the decades he played a key role in guiding the Church through periods of social and political change, offering moral counsel and pastoral care beyond ecclesiastical boundaries.

During the celebration, messages of appreciation were delivered on behalf of Church authorities, acknowledging his enduring contribution to evangelisation, education and the spiritual formation of clergy and laity alike. Clerics described him as a mentor whose quiet strength and wisdom continue to inspire even in advanced age.

The ceremony also underscored Cardinal Wamala’s legacy as one of Uganda’s most senior and respected Catholic figures whose life reflects steadfast devotion to service and faith.

As the Church marks his 99 years leaders said the tribute was not only a celebration of longevity but a recognition of a life dedicated to guiding others in faith and compassion.
