Two-time African Footballer of the Year, El Hadji Ousseynou Diouf, is in Uganda on a courtesy visit aimed at inspiring young talent and discussing football development in the country.
The Senegalese football legend, who won the African Player of the Year award in 2001 and 2002, arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Saturday, March 8, 2025. He was warmly received by Ugandan music star Eddy Kenzo, FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein (representing FUFA President Hon. Eng. Moses Magogo), and former Uganda Cranes players Hassan Wasswa Mawanda and Tonny Mawejje.
Speaking upon his arrival, Diouf expressed his enthusiasm for being in Uganda and his commitment to the growth of African football.
“I am happy to be here, and I thank my brother Kenzo for the invitation. I am here to inspire young talent and discuss various aspects of football development. I am African, and I want to see African football grow,” he stated.

During his four-day visit, Diouf attended the U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier between Uganda and Kenya at Hamz Stadium. His presence is expected to motivate young players and encourage discussions on the future of Ugandan football.
With the support of FUFA and Big Talent Soccer Academy, Diouf’s visit will include mentorship sessions, football clinics, and meetings focused on strengthening Uganda’s youth football structures. The former Liverpool, Blackburn, and Sunderland winger will share insights from his illustrious career and discuss ways to elevate football standards in the country.
Since retiring from professional football, Diouf has taken on several ambassadorial roles with FIFA and CAF. He also serves as a Government Goodwill Envoy in Senegal, promoting sports and youth development. Additionally, he owns a sports media outlet and a modern gymnasium in Senegal, further showcasing his dedication to the growth of sports on the African continent.
Diouf’s visit is expected to leave a lasting impact on Uganda’s football landscape. His experience at the highest levels of the game will serve as an inspiration to young players, while his discussions with football stakeholders could pave the way for improved development programs.
As Uganda continues to nurture its football talent, engagements with African legends like Diouf highlight the country’s commitment to achieving greater success on the continental and global stage.
