UWA LAUNCHES NEW RHINO SANCTUARY IN KARAMOJA.

By Nicholas Banadda

UWA has launched a new Rhino Sanctuary with support from the EU NaturAfrica Kidepo-Turkana Landscape Project — a major milestone toward restoring Uganda’s rhino population.

In a press statement issued on 25 febuary, UWA states that in addition to this project, a Joint Operations Command Centre has been commissioned, motorcycles deployed to strengthen field patrols, and the Rhino Sanctuary unveiled — paving the way for rhino reintroduction.

“These efforts strengthen human-wildlife coexistence, empower community conservancies, and enhance conservation outcomes across Karamoja landscape,” adds the statement.

UWA States “We are grateful to our partners and local communities for driving this impactful work,”. Rhino was reintroduced to Uganda 2005/2006 following their total extinction in early 1980s due to poaching. The Rhino Fund Uganda established Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola which started with six southern white rhinos and has grown to over 50, supporting conservation and breeding efforts. ends
