Erias Lukwago on Thursday led the city in marking Drop Everything And Read Day 2026, serving as the City’s Chief Reader during celebrations held at Kitante Primary School.
The event, organised by Kampala Capital City Authority under the theme “Restoring Hope for Tomorrow,” brought together learners, educators, and city officials to promote a culture of reading among pupils.

In his remarks, Lukwago commended the organisers for spearheading an initiative that inspires learners and helps build confidence, resilience, and optimism despite the challenges faced in public schools.
However, he expressed concern over the continued decline in top academic performance within KCCA schools, noting that the absence of high aggregate scores in recent years remains troubling. He urged current candidates to work hard and reverse the trend.

The Lord Mayor also praised the administration of Kitante Primary School for safeguarding the institution’s land, highlighting efforts to protect its 19 acres from encroachment, which he said is vital for future expansion and development.
Lukwago further raised concerns about limited funding in the education sector, pointing out that the current capitation grant of about Shs20,000 per pupil is inadequate. He also cited the high teacher-to-pupil ratio—estimated at around 1:170—far above the target outlined in the KCCA Education Master Plan.
As part of the day’s activities, Lukwago read a storybook titled “The Wise King” to the pupils, encouraging a love for reading.

The function was attended by several leaders, including Olive Namazzi, head teachers from KCCA schools, members of school management committees, and technical staff from KCCA.
