Zziwa Injured While Reenacting Christ’s Suffering on Good Friday

BY BUWULE JOSEPH MARY,

Dennis Zziwa, a second-year law student at Kampala International University, endured a painful but symbolic experience on Good Friday as he took on the role of Jesus Christ during the annual Way of the Cross procession at Our Lady of Africa Church.

Zziwa, who carried the cross and reenacted the final moments of Christ’s journey to Calvary, sustained injuries during the dramatization, particularly from the simulated beatings that form part of the religious tradition. Witnesses say the performance drew large crowds of faithful, many of whom were deeply moved by the realism and devotion displayed throughout the procession.

However, as the enactment intensified, Zziwa reportedly suffered physical harm that required immediate medical attention. First responders from the Uganda Red Cross Society, who were on standby during the event, quickly intervened and administered first aid at the scene.

“He remained committed to the role despite the strain, but the injuries became evident as the procession progressed,” one of the attendants noted.

Following the initial treatment, Zziwa was transferred to Lamone Health Center for further medical care and observation. Health workers at the facility confirmed that he was in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

The Way of the Cross, a significant Good Friday tradition among Christians, involves a reenactment of Jesus Christ’s suffering and crucifixion. It often attracts large numbers of participants and spectators, with some individuals taking on physically demanding roles in a show of faith and devotion.

Despite the incident, the procession continued peacefully, with religious leaders emphasizing the importance of safety during such intense dramatizations.

Zziwa’s dedication has since sparked conversations among the faithful about balancing spiritual expression with personal safety during religious observances.
