KAMPALA.
Police in Mukono District are holding two suspects over alleged electricity vandalism and impersonation .
This came after the duo reportedly posed as officials from Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
The suspects have been identified as Paul Kakooza, 24, and Bernley Tenywa, 32, both electricians.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Ms Rachel Kawala, the incident occurred in Kasai area in Mukono District.
“It is alleged that the two suspects, dressed in uniforms resembling those of the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), gained access to Emeralt Primary School under the pretext of taking meter readings. They reportedly climbed an electricity pole and removed electric cables supplying power to the school, yet they did not have any official identification documents authorising them to carry out such work,” Ms Kawala said in a statement issued on April 9, 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were using a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFR 408P, whose number plate had been painted blue to resemble official UEDCL vehicles in an apparent attempt to avoid suspicion.
Police said the two men are currently in custody as investigations continue and are expected to be charged with vandalism of electricity infrastructure and impersonation.
Authorities warned the public to remain vigilant and to always verify the identity of individuals claiming to be officials from utility companies before granting them access to premises.
Last year, UEDCL Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa revealed that the company had lost four million units of electricity, translating into billions of shillings, due to the vandalism of transmission towers in Mukono.
