Grief as Police officer dies in motorcycle crash

ARUA. The police fraternity in West Nile is mourning the death of their own Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Wilfred Egwuyu who died in a motorcycle crash .

Egyuyu , 44 died on Friday evening after a kickstand left down toppled over the motorcycle he was riding. The North West Nile Region Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea said AIP Egwuyu who was attached to Arua City Police Health Centre III was riding the Yamaya motorcycle from Yumbe Town, heading towards Yumbe Hospital, with a passenger on board when the crash reportedly happened at Manduru Cell, Ombea, Ward, Kuru Town Council, Yumbe District at around 8pm.

“Upon reaching Manduru Cell, Omba Ward, the motorcycle’s stand, which was not folded, struck in the ground. The rider lost control, causing the motorcycle to fall.

The deceased sustained a head injury and lost consciousness,” he said.He said AIP Egwuyu who has also been a student at Arua Institute of Health Sciences was rushed to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

SP Asea said, the passenger Geoffrey Ambayo, 34, a resident of Kuru town council and also a student at the institute was in a stable condition after he was rushed to the same health facility.

“The motorcycle that was initially kept by the local area council has now been retrieved and is parked at Kuru Police Station pending inspection. Our traffic officers visited the scene,” SP Asea said. The officer’s body was examined by the Regional Police Surgeon and transported to Arua City mortuary.
