The Makerere University Library has received a valuable donation of economics books from the personal collection of the late Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, one of Uganda’s most respected economists and former Governor of the Bank of Uganda.
The donation was made by Prof. Mutebile’s family through The Mutebile Foundation and was officially received by Dr. Ruth Nalumaga, the University Librarian at Makerere University.
According to the university library, the collection comprises a wide range of economics literature and reference materials that Prof. Mutebile accumulated throughout his distinguished career in public service, economic policy formulation, and academia.
The donation is expected to enrich Makerere University’s library resources, particularly for students, researchers, lecturers, and policymakers pursuing studies and research in economics, finance, public policy, and development studies.
Prof. Tumusiime-Mutebile, who served as Governor of the Bank of Uganda for more than two decades, played a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s economic transformation and maintaining macroeconomic stability. Throughout his career, he was widely recognized for championing sound fiscal and monetary policies that contributed significantly to Uganda’s economic growth.
Speaking on behalf of the family, representatives of The Mutebile Foundation said the donation was intended to preserve the late economist’s legacy while ensuring that future generations of scholars continue to benefit from the knowledge and insights contained in his personal library.
Receiving the books, Dr. Ruth Nalumaga expressed appreciation to the family for entrusting Makerere University with the collection, noting that the materials will serve as an important academic resource for the university community and beyond.
The donation further strengthens Makerere University Library’s commitment to preserving knowledge and providing access to scholarly resources that support teaching, learning, innovation, and research.
Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile passed away in January 2022, leaving behind a legacy as one of Uganda’s most influential economists and public servants. His contributions to economic policy and national development continue to inspire scholars, economists, and policymakers across the region.
