Uganda Records Over 58 Million Mobile Devices as Digital Connectivity Expands

By Joseph Mary Buwule

Uganda’s digital landscape continues to grow steadily, with the latest figures showing a significant increase in mobile device ownership across the country. According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Uganda had recorded 20.3 million smartphones, 24.7 million feature phones, and 13.3 million basic phones by March 2026.

The statistics highlight the growing adoption of mobile technology and signal a positive trajectory toward increased digital inclusion and access to information and communication services for millions of Ugandans.

UCC noted that the surge in mobile device usage reflects a future where digital services are becoming increasingly accessible to people from all walks of life. The Commission emphasized that connectivity remains a critical enabler of social and economic transformation, regardless of the type of device being used.

“Connectivity serves as a powerful tool for communication, access to essential services, and unlocking new opportunities for individuals and communities,” UCC stated.

The Commission further explained that expanding access to mobile devices is helping more Ugandans participate in the digital economy, access online government services, engage in e-commerce, and benefit from digital financial services.

To support this transformation, the government, through UCC’s Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF), continues to invest in initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

UCUSAF has been instrumental in extending ICT infrastructure and services to communities that have historically faced challenges in accessing reliable communication networks and digital technologies. These interventions include the construction of ICT hubs, expansion of internet connectivity, and support for digital literacy programs.

According to UCC, the ultimate goal is to ensure that no Ugandan is left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey.

As mobile penetration continues to rise and more citizens gain access to digital tools and services, stakeholders believe Uganda is well-positioned to harness technology as a driver of economic growth, innovation, education, and social development.

The growing number of smartphones, feature phones, and basic phones across the country underscores the importance of continued investment in ICT infrastructure and digital inclusion initiatives as Uganda advances toward a more connected and digitally empowered future.
