Lukwago Appears Before Makindye Court as Bail Ruling Looms in Treason-Related Case

The President of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Erias Lukwago, has been brought before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye for a ruling on his bail application in a case where he is charged with misprision of treason.

Lukwago, who is also serving as lead counsel for opposition figure Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, is accused of allegedly failing to report information related to treason said to have been committed by his clients.

The court session attracted supporters, legal practitioners, and political observers eager to hear the outcome of the bail application, which could determine whether Lukwago remains in custody as the case proceeds.

The charge of misprision of treason relates to allegations that an individual had knowledge of a treasonous act but failed to report it to the relevant authorities. Prosecutors contend that Lukwago’s actions fall within this provision of the law, while his legal team has maintained that the charges are politically motivated and lack merit.

The case is closely linked to the ongoing legal proceedings involving Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, whose matters have continued to draw significant public and political attention.

By the time of filing this report, the Chief Magistrate’s Court had not yet delivered its ruling on Lukwago’s bail application. Supporters and members of the legal fraternity remained gathered at the court premises awaiting the court’s decision.

The ruling is expected to have significant implications for the defense team representing Besigye and Lutale, as well as the broader political and legal discourse surrounding the high-profile case.
