Uganda Cranes Secure Crucial 1-0 Victory Over Guinea in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Kampala, Uganda – Uganda Cranes bounced back in style with a 1-0 victory over Guinea in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Group G encounter held at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, on Tuesday night.

Allan Okello’s Stunning Free-Kick Seals the Win

A breathtaking free-kick from Allan Okello in the 36th minute proved decisive as Uganda dominated the match, showcasing resilience and tactical discipline. The midfielder curled the ball past Stade de Reims 2 goalkeeper Soumaila Sylla, igniting celebrations among the 20,000 fans in attendance.

Following a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Mozambique in their previous game, Uganda needed a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive. Head coach Joseph Paul Put made four crucial changes to the starting lineup, bringing in goalkeeper Alionzi Nafian, Ronald Ssekiganda, Travis Mutyaba, and Rogers Mato.

Tactical Changes and Key Performances

  • Alionzi Nafian replaced Isima Watenga between the posts.
  • Ronald Ssekiganda stepped in for the injured captain Khalid Aucho.
  • Travis Mutyaba started ahead of Jude Ssemugabi.
  • Rogers Mato returned after serving a match suspension, replacing Denis Omedi, who was sent off in the previous fixture.

Missed Chances and Tactical Brilliance

Uganda had several opportunities to extend their lead. In the first half, Muhammad Shaban squandered two golden chances—a free header from an Okello corner and a close-range tap-in from an Abdul Azizi Kayondo cross. Guinea’s Yadaly Serhou Guirassy, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, attempted a long-range shot but missed the target in the 24th minute.

As the second half commenced, Uganda was forced into an early substitution when defender Elvis Bwomono suffered an injury and was replaced by Timothy Awany. Allan Okello continued his impressive display, creating goal-scoring opportunities, while substitute Calvin Kabuye came in for the injured Shaban in the 59th minute.

Defender Bevis Mugabi played a crucial role at the back, blocking a dangerous attack before launching a counterattack that saw Mato threaten Guinea’s defense. Ssekiganda received a late booking before Ssemugabi replaced Mutyaba in the closing minutes.

Late Drama and Defensive Resilience

Guinea pushed for an equalizer, but Uganda’s solid defense held firm. Goalkeeper Alionzi Nafian made a crucial save in the 87th minute, denying Aliou Badara Balde from close range. Guirassy had one final chance deep in stoppage time, but his effort sailed over the crossbar, securing Uganda’s hard-fought win.

Uganda Climbs the Group G Standings

With this victory, Uganda now has 9 points and moves to third place in the six-team Group G standings, just three points behind leaders Algeria and Mozambique. Meanwhile, Guinea suffered another setback following their previous draw with Somalia.

The Cranes will now shift focus to their upcoming fixtures, as they aim to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification dream alive.
