GOMBA . President Yoweri Museveni is today Wednesday expected to commission the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) Meat and Beans Processing Limited.
The state-of-the-art agro-processing plant will supply processed meat and bean products to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Uganda Police Force.
The company, located at the NEC headquarters in Kisozi, Gomba District, is expected to strengthen Uganda’s value addition agenda by processing locally produced agricultural commodities into quality food products while creating a ready market for farmers.
The facility will procure livestock and beans from farmers across the country before processing, packaging and distributing the products to the country’s security forces.
Officials say the investment is intended to improve food quality, enhance efficiency in food supply, reduce post-harvest losses and promote local industrialisation.
The commissioning comes as the government intensifies efforts to encourage value addition in agriculture, one of the key pillars of Uganda’s economic transformation strategy.
President Museveni has consistently urged Ugandans to move beyond exporting raw agricultural products and instead invest in processing and manufacturing to create jobs, increase household incomes and improve export earnings.
Uganda is one of Africa’s leading producers of beans, while livestock farming remains an important source of income for many households. However, much of the country’s agricultural output is marketed in raw form, limiting returns for producers and reducing opportunities for industrial growth.
The new processing company is expected to address this challenge by creating demand for locally produced livestock and beans, while adding value through modern processing, quality assurance and packaging.
Analysts say value addition enables producers to earn more from agricultural products, improves competitiveness and expands access to regional and international markets. It also contributes to food safety, longer product shelf life and more efficient supply chains.
For farmers, the establishment of the factory offers prospects for a reliable market and stronger linkages with the manufacturing sector. Increased demand for livestock and quality bean varieties is expected to stimulate production and encourage farmers to adopt improved agricultural practices.
Beyond agriculture, the investment is expected to generate employment opportunities in food processing, engineering, quality control, logistics, transport, warehousing and administration. Local businesses supplying packaging materials, veterinary services and other production inputs are also expected to benefit.
The project further underscores the expanding role of the National Enterprise Corporation, the commercial arm of the UPDF, in supporting Uganda’s industrialisation agenda through investments in manufacturing, engineering, construction, logistics and agro-processing.
Government has identified agro-industrialisation as one of the priority programmes under the Parish Development Model and the National Development Plan, recognising that processing agricultural commodities is critical to increasing incomes, reducing poverty and building a resilient economy.
The commissioning of NEC Meat and Beans Processing Limited is expected to reinforce these efforts by demonstrating how institutional demand can support domestic manufacturing while creating sustainable markets for Ugandan farmers.
As Uganda pursues its vision of becoming a modern, industrialised economy, investments in value addition continue to be viewed as essential in transforming agriculture from subsistence production into a commercially competitive sector.
The Kisozi processing facility is expected to contribute to that transformation by converting locally produced meat and beans into finished products that meet national standards while supporting economic growth, job creation and food security.
