Police investigate UPDF soldiers who beat up police commanders

KAMPALA.

Police in Kampala Metropolitan area investigating circumstances under which a group of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers raided Lubowa Police Station near Namasuba-Zzana Township along Kampala –Entebbe highway and disarmed all policemen on duty .


In the Wednesday evening raid reportedly commanded by a UPDF personnel at the rank of lieutenant , saw the officer-in-charge of the station , ASP Innocent Sunday, his juniors and over 10 civilians beaten up.


According to Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman, investigations are underway to establish the motive of the soldiers behind the raid.
” We have obtained CCTV footage of what happened, and investigations are underway ,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

According to eye witnesses , a lieutenant of the UPDF arrived at Lubowa Police Station with men he accused of having parked a vehicle in a place near the National Social Security Fund estate in Lubowa.


Mr Sunday , the OC invited his Officer-in-Charge of Investigations to assess the nature of the case and determine the offence that the suspects had committed.


A source said as the police commanders were talking to the complainant (a lieutenant) to understand what had happened, some 10 UPDF soldiers descended on the quarter guard where armed police guards were stationed .


The police guards’ efforts to establish the reason for the visit ended immediately as soldiers became confrontational, a source said.
The two police guards retreated to the main office to inform their commanders that armed soldiers were attempting to raid the station.

But this did not stop the soldiers who came with full force to took over control of the station for close to 20 minutes ,but by the time they left , all the officers and civilians who had come to report cases ,were bleeding . Those injured were swiftly rushed to nearby health facilities to receive treatment .
