Museveni’s visit: Minister Amongi’s posters remove to paint Lira City yellow


LIRA.A cold political war is seemingly brewing in the heart of northern Uganda’s Lira City as next year’s General Elections draw closer .


For instance, campaign posters belonging to Ms Betty Amongi – a prominent Uganda People Congress (UPC) party candidate – are mysteriously disappearing in Lira City . Ms Amongi is the minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, also the incumbent Member of Parliament of Oyam South.


She is running against Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the minister of Health, also the incumbent Lira City Woman Member of Parliament.
In a video that has gone viral on social media platforms in Lango , some people moving in vehicles could be seen in the wee hours of Saturday night removing Ms Amongi’s campign posters that were carefully placed in strategic locations.


However, supporters of UPC were left irritated ahead of the President’s arrival, sensing a deliberate attempt to suppress their voice as their candidate’s posters mysteriously disappeared. However ,Dr Aceng’s posters have remained intact


Today , August 17, 2025, President Museveni is expected to meet local leaders in the Lango Sub-region, where livestock compensation issues have dragged on for decades. It is remains to be seen how the fight between the political camps will play out when Museveni finally arrives in the area .


Mr Museveni is also will likely be confronted with the harsh realities of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s troubled livestock compensation programme.


In 2010, the Lango War Claimants’ Association sued the government for damages suffered during years of armed conflict between the Ugandan army and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Four years later, the High Court in Lira ruled in their favour, ordering compensation for 69,475 claimants.
