Uganda and Kenya Unveil Cross-Border Tourism Drive in Mombasa

The governments of Uganda and Kenya have jointly launched the fourth edition of the Coast Tourism Conference, setting the stage for one of East Africa’s largest platforms for cross-border tourism promotion. The event was flagged off in Mombasa this week and will culminate in a three-day conference from October 27 to 29 at Ocean Beach Resort & Spa in Malindi, Kilifi County.

This year’s theme, “Leveraging Youth, Innovation and Technology for Responsive and Inclusive Tourism,” reflects a deliberate shift toward fresh ideas and new energy in the sector. Organizers say the emphasis on youth-led innovation will encourage the use of digital tools, smart hospitality solutions, and technology-enabled startups to drive inclusive growth.

Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, described the partnership as one built on complementarity rather than competition, urging both countries to harness their diverse strengths to create a seamless experience for visitors.

That began modestly with just 200 participants in 2022 has now grown into a major annual gathering. Organizers expect this year’s edition to attract more than 750 delegates, including investors, tourism boards, hoteliers, and travel innovators. The growth underscores the increasing importance of regional collaboration in attracting global tourists to East Africa.

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro commended the role of young entrepreneurs in reshaping the industry, highlighting the need for sustainable practices that also create opportunities for local communities.

The build-up to the conference will feature a familiarization trip for Ugandan stakeholders to the Kenyan Coast from October 22 to 26, followed by a golf tournament at Vipingo Ridge on October 25. Uganda Airlines has also announced discounted fares for registered participants, further encouraging cross-border attendance.

Tourism authorities from both countries say the collaboration is more than just an event, it is part of a long-term effort to grow East Africa’s competitiveness as a global destination. By combining Uganda’s renowned wildlife and cultural heritage with Kenya’s coastal appeal, the initiative aims to offer tourists a richer and more diverse experience.

As the countdown to October begins, the Uganda–Kenya Coast Tourism Conference is shaping up to be not just a celebration of partnership, but a clear statement that East Africa’s tourism future will be youth-driven, tech-savvy, and regionally integrated.
