Anita Annet Among, Uganda’s current Speaker of Parliament, was elected to the prestigious role on March 21, 2022, succeeding the late Jacob Oulanyah. Known for her steadfast dedication and unwavering commitment, Among’s election was seen as a natural outcome, given her position as Deputy Speaker and the overwhelming majority of Members of Parliament (MPs) aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Among secured 401 votes out of 468 MPs who voted, while her rival, Hon. Asuman Basalirwa from the opposition, garnered just 66 votes.

Who is Anita Among?

Born on November 23, 1973, in rural Bukedea District, Anita Among grew up with a deep understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary Ugandans. She uses her personal journey to inspire young girls, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

Among’s academic achievements are remarkable. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Makerere University in 2005 and went on to complete a Master of Business Administration at the same institution in 2008. In 2018, she obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from Kampala International University. Along the way, she worked toward becoming a Chartered Certified Accountant—a testament to her commitment to professional growth.

Political Journey and Rise to Leadership

Anita Among’s political career began in earnest when she entered Parliament as an independent candidate. Despite facing defeat twice in the early years of her political career, including in the 2007 and 2011 general elections for the District Woman Representative seat in Bukedea District, Among’s perseverance paid off when she won the seat in 2016 as an independent.

During the 10th Parliament (2016-2021), Among served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE), where she demonstrated her leadership and ability to drive legislative business.

Her ascent within the NRM party culminated in her unopposed election as the Bukedea District Woman MP in 2021 after joining the ruling party. Her tenure as Deputy Speaker, beginning in 2021, was marked by efficiency, transparency, and a focus on expediting legislative processes. Within just nine months of the 11th Parliament, a remarkable number of Bills and reports had been debated and passed, setting a record for legislative productivity.

Among has also taken a firm stance on accountability within the legislature, holding committees to deadlines for processing Bills. For example, in February 2022, she ordered all committees to complete their work by February 10, ensuring that no Bills remained stagnant. Her assertiveness and ability to enforce parliamentary rules have made her a respected figure in Ugandan politics.

Her leadership extended beyond the parliamentary chambers. Among has been vocal about the need to improve the welfare of public servants, particularly Uganda’s police officers. In a notable display of compassion, she visited a police officer’s home during Women’s Day 2022, shedding light on the poor living conditions of many officers. She then rallied other leaders to push for better pay and welfare for the police force, demonstrating her commitment to ensuring that those who serve Uganda are treated with dignity.
